A projection mapping performance blending music and visuals, exploring a middle-aged scientist’s surreal encounter with UFOs and his descent into a bizarre, dystopian reality
This projection mapping project merges visual storytelling and sound design, vividly illustrating the surreal journey of a middle-aged scientist obsessed with UFOs. Unexpectedly struck by the very object of his lifelong pursuit, the protagonist is plunged into a world defined by ambiguity, distortion, and psychological unrest. Set in the unsettling ambiance of the 1950s, the performance adopts a pseudo-documentary aesthetic to blur the boundaries between reality and illusion.
Opening with a distorted, vintage newscast enveloped in TV static and glitches, the projections evoke a distant and uncertain past, emphasizing instability and mystery. The stage itself transforms into a living screen, framed as the exterior of an antique television, encapsulating the unfolding narrative within its boundaries.
As the scene shifts into a haunted forest setting, ambient sounds of nighttime woods and malfunctioning electronic signals accompany visual projections of increasingly distorted, twisted trees cloaked in mist and shadow. This unsettling imagery intensifies, mirroring the scientist’s internal disintegration. Dramatic overexposure effects and creeping shadows heighten the eerie, oppressive atmosphere.
In a sudden and absurd contrast, the tempo accelerates into a surreal rap sequence, punctuated by projected disco lights spinning chaotically across the stage. This playful yet jarring juxtaposition further distorts reality, immersing the audience in the protagonist's fractured psyche.
Ultimately, as sanity recedes once more, vibrant colors drain from the visuals. Vines projected onto the stage floor rise slowly onto vertical panels, symbolically consuming the final remnants of coherence. This cyclical journey from gray to vivid color and back reflects the scientist's descent into an inescapable, dystopian dreamscape.
